Weekly fishing reports on Long Island at http://www.thefisherman.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=directory.category&PDIR=12
It was a tough go for cod on the East End this past week between some days lost to the weather and generally slow fishing on the days boats could sail. There is some thought that the good stretch of cod action in January was fueled by the full moon. Let’s see if the fishing repeats on this month’s moon which will be this weekend.
Reports were a bit more encouraging out of South Shore ports where there has been a decent pick of fish most fishable days. Capt. Joe on the Laura Lee out of Captree was able to put a decent catch together on two trips this past week. A few haddock, ling and out of season sea bass and blackfish have been mixed with the cod.
This week’s mild weather should help keep the herring inshore, with the Coney Island, Canarsie and 69th Street piers still seeing the most consistent action. Those mild temperatures should also inspire some white perch action in the Island’s tidal creeks. We’ve had reports from Santapogue Creek behind Taco Bell in West Babyon, Carlls River, the Argyle Lake outflow, Connetquot River, Tuthill Creek in Patchogue, Browns River in Sayville, and Carmans River in Brookhaven over the past couple of weeks. Ultra-light spinning tackle with 2 or 4-pound test and 1/8 or 3/16-ounce jig heads tipped with nightcrawler have been working best.
On the freshwater side, flyrodders can still count on scoring some nice rainbows and brookies inside Connetquot River State Park Preserve. Catch and release action is an option for largemouth bass and pickerel in the Island’s lakes and ponds, and Lake Ronkonkoma is worth checking out for walleyes.
